When he was 7 years old, Tyler Brown's family decided to relocate from Connecticut to Seattle, WA. Problem was, once their VW Van reached Eastern Oregon's Baker City, it broke down. "My dad took a bike ride around town, came back and said, "This will work. We'll stay here," Brown say.

Brown's brewpub, Barley Brown recently won a gold medal at the Great American Beer Fesival (GABF), which means that it is officially among the nation's elite.
Afer judges announced that Brown and his brewmaster, Shawn Kelso's Tumble Off Pale Ale beat 82 othe't rs in the American Pale Ale category, "Shawn had his arms in the air and was running to the stage to get the medal," Brown says with a laugh.
The easygoing brewmaster admits that beating the nation's magnates feels great. "It just goes to show, even though we're small, we can make as quality a product as the big breweries," he says. But he insists the real reward is in watching locals savor the pours from his eight taps. "After we won, people camin and said, "You know, you don't have to go to the competitions.
