The Hayward main library is built on lands that were once of Don Guillermo Castro's horse corrals. Castro was the original land grantee who settled the area. William Hayward was a squatter that Castro eventually sold a large plot of land to. As the city developed, Guillermo Castro set aside much of his own land for civic purposes.
The library cornerstone reads 1950, but the dedication plaque by the door states it opened in 1951. In 1981 the library was renovated and re-dedicated to the memory of Cesar Chavez.
