Plaque 1 reads:
Dedicated to the memory of Captain Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809), namesake of Fort Lewis, Commander of the corps of volunteers for northwestern discovery (corps of discovery) and the first governor of the territory of Louisiana. This dedication further honors all those at Fort Lewis who have followed Captain Lewis's example of selfless service and devotion to duty and the United States Army whose contributions to the nation have ensured its success as a free country.
