Plans for the Basilica started in the middle of the 19th century and were decided on following the 1870 war. Construction commenced in 1872, following the plans of P.Bosson (1814-1888), who was succeeded by Sainte-Marie Perrin. The last stone was laid in 1884 and the building was consecrated in 1896. One of the masterpieces of eclecticism in Europe, both for its architecture and the exterior and interior decoration.
