This unassuming schoolhouse in Harveysburg, Ohio has a very important history.
Founded in 1831 by Elizabeth Burgess Harvey, this was the first free school for Africa-American children. Harveysburg itself was well known as a stop along the Underground Railroad as well.
The school house had fallen into disrepair, but was recently restored and turned into a museum. Inside are old yearbooks, and school logs, clothing, sheet music and other items from the school. The museum hosts an open house on the third Sunday of September and the third Sunday in May from 1p-5p. It can also be opened by appointment by contacting Lucy McCarren at, 1-513-897-6195. Admission is free.
