This totem is in a scenic overlook going over the pass between Victoria and the Cowichan Valley, pass is called the Malahat.

The Salish Bear Pole on whose base it sits was dedicated in 1966, a project of the Native Indians Participation Centennial Sub-Committee to commemorate the centenary of the union of 1866 of the colonies on Vancouver Island with the mainland as British Columbia. It was carved by Mr. Stanley Modeste of Cowichan Indian Band.
