The Scajaquada Expressway bridge over Delaware Avenue was built by the Works Progress Administration in 1936. It replaced a similarly styled stone viaduct built in 1874, which allowed carriage traffic to pass over Delaware Avenue to the opposite sides of Frederick Law Olmsted's Delaware Park. Around 1960, New York State turned the bridge into part of the Scajaquada Expressway, which was built right through the middle of Delaware Park.
