Steam locomotives consume as much as 1,700 gallons of water a day. To provide adequate supply on the Prairies, railway companies erected water towers every six stops. Depending on their design they may hold anywhere from 4,000 to 40,000 gallons.
In cold weather the tanks were often encased in ice with the water kept from freezing by the railway section crew that would maintain a heater to keep the water from freezing.
