Declared Landscape Protected in 1995 by decree, entering to comprise of the Red Regional de Espacios Naturales Protegidos (Regional Network of Protected Natural Spaces).
The triangular profile of Cabo de Peñas, the most important cape in the region, offers a natural landscape of undeniable ecological value, with impressive cliffs over the Cantabrian Sea with panoramic views from the coast, reaching 100 metres over sea level in some cases, where both the land and the sea share the same space in an amazing balance.
It extends to both sides of the Cabo Peñas, between Nieva Peninsula and Punta la Vaca with a 1926 hectares surface. The beaches, usually made of stones or sand, are very beautiful. Among them, the Xagó and Verdicio beaches stand out. From the cape, small islands and rocky islets can be seen; among them, La Erbosa stands out, being the second island in extension in the Principality.
Inland the declared area does not measure more than 3 km in the widest point and the relief is not very noticeable, with short, not large fluvial valleys.
There is parking next to the lighthouse to leave the vehicle and just here is the entrance to the building and the paths to viewpoints of the cape too, agreeing with waymark coordinates.
Cabo de Peñas lighthouse has an interesting visitor centre (1 €), but it is not necesary to pay to see the landscape.
