After the accident which destroyed the center of the bridge they decided to build a newer and better bridge. They removed most of the bridge, but left the begining of the bridge on either sides of Tampa Bay for the locals to use as a fishing pier. Now it has the distinction of being the "worlds longest fishing pier" per their website. The piers are open 24/7 and 365 days a year.
