Built in 1929 as the regional headquarters for Union Carbide & Carbon Co. (you might have heard the name used in conjunction with the Bhopal, India disaster), this skyscraper is one of Chicago’s smaller, rising a mere 503 feet. But that doesn’t make the building any less visually stunning, even amid the other skyscrapers crowding the city's skyline.
An urban legend persists that Daniel and Herbert Burnham purposefully designed the building to resemble a dark green champagne bottle with gold foil covering the neck. No one knows where the legend came from, but it suits the building’s current resident - the Hard Rock Hotel.
