Here is one of the portals for the Cincinnati Subway, which was intended to run from downtown up through St. Bernard and onto Oakley.
To keep down costs and expedite construction, the planners used a portion of the route and bed of The Miami Erie Canal. The canal ran from Toledo, OH to Cincinnati, connecting the Great Lakes to the Ohio River.
Because of political corruption and other local issues, money ran out before it could be completed. Central Parkway runs on top of the tunnels. The tunnels now stand vacant, but were considered for modern transit projects. Periodic tours of the tunnels are available. Be sure to check out the pictures in the attached link.
The following is a description of the proposed system and is from the attached webpage:
The total length of the line is 15.56 miles, of which 6.50 miles are in subway, 0.63 miles in tunnels and 8.43 miles in the open. Included in the open are twenty bridges with a total length of 2,206ft. and 6,100ft. concrete trestle along the Ohio River Bluff.
