The Buffalo Municipal Airport opened in 1927 with passenger and airmail service between Buffalo and Cleveland. By 1955, passenger service had proved popular enough to expand the terminal, tripling the square footage and bringing the total number of gates to 11. In 1956, the state-created Niagara Frontier Port Authority, later to be known as the Niagara Frontier Transit Authority (NFTA), took over operations of the airport from the City of Buffalo. They then changed the name of the airport to the Greater Buffalo International Airport in 1959.
By the 1960, the airlines were increasing the number of flights and began pressing the NFTA for more gates. A study was done to determine the best way to accommodate the needs and it was decided to build an interim terminal. The new west terminal was opened in 1971 to alleviate crowding at the existing east terminal until a new larger regional airport could be built. In 1991, both terminals had reached maximum capacity and had outgrown their usefulness. After an extensive analysis, it was decided to built a new single terminal which would require the demolition of both existing terminals.
The new 15 gate $56 million terminal opened November 3, 1997 and was renamed Buffalo Niagara International Airport. It was designed by Kohn Pederson Fox and it was influenced by the local architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright and the past history of aviation in the area. They envisioned a crystalline structure symbolizing flight. 27,000 square feet of glass dominate the 350-foot-wide lobby with its 50-foot ceiling and arching walls. When looked at from the air, the terminal itself looks like a giant aircraft poised for flight.
Since it's opening, the new terminal has been expanded both to the east and west, bringing the total number of gates to 25, 21 of which are in use. The airport is served by USAirways, Southwest, American, United, Delta, Continental, JetBlue, and Airtran.

In this waymarkers opinion, it's a shame they built a parking ramp directly in front of the terminal so that it hides the great design.
