From the Kemper Art Museum website: "Louise Bourgeois began her career as a Surrealist painter and engraver, but in the 1940s turned to sculpture, working first in wood, then later in rubber, stone, and bronze, as in the Spider sculptures on the front lawn and façade of the Kemper Museum. According to the artist the spider is a feminist hero figure—protective, deliberate, and patient. These bronze spiders honor the artist’s mother."
