The 4 time capsules in the Helium Monument were sealed in 1968, commemorating the 100th Anniversary of discovery of helium in the gaseous atmosphere surrounding the Sun. The four time columns were filled with books, documents, and various artifacts that will tell future generations about life in 1968. After the time columns were filled, the caps were welded on and the contents sealed in a helium atmosphere. The first was opened twenty-five years after being sealed, in 1993. In fifty, one-hundred, and one thousand years from the time of filling, the remaining three individual columns are to be opened. One of the paragraphs on the disk beneath the monument says, "The Helium Centennial Committee from Government and Industry has placed this monument at Amarillo, Texas to endure as a visible reminder to future generations of the concern in our time for effective natural resource utilization."
