For 2 days following a battle at Marye's Heights in Fredericksburg in December 1862, wounded Union soldiers who were caught between battle lines cried out for water. Sgt. Kirkland of the 2nd South Carolina Volunteers crossed enemy lines to bring canteens of water to his fallen foes at risk to his own life.
Located at the Fredericksburg Battlefield at 1013 Lafayette Boulevard, Fredericksburg, this dramatic memorial was erected by the state of South Carolina, the Commonwealth of Virginia, descendants of Richard Kirkland, and citizens of the United States in 1964. It was dedicated to national unity and the brotherhood of man. The image now serves as a logo for the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.
