One Hundred and two Confederate Soldiers died of smallpox in the Hospitals in and around Lynchburg, Virginia. Many of they were treated by Dr. John J. Terrell who treated many of the wounded Confederate soldiers who fought throughout Central and Southwest Virginia. This small memorial stands just inside the Confederate Memorial Arch in the Confederate Section of the Old City Cemetery in Lynchburg, Virginia.

The inscription on the small monument reads:

"In memory of the Confederate Soldiers who died of smallpox in the hospitals of Lynchburg during the War Between the States."
