During the Revolutionary War General George Rogers Clark fought the British and their allied Indians in the Illinois Territory on the north side of the Ohio River.

The statue was sculpted by Felix W. de Weldon in 1970. It is located on the Riverfront Plaza behind the Kentucky Theatre.
