The Goodsell House is significant as an example of vernacular Queen Anne style residential construction in the hamlet of Old Forge, NY. It was built in 1899-1900 by George Goodsell, a prominent local builder/contractor. The modest design and decorative features of the house reflect regional building practice at the time Old Forge was permanently established in the early 20th century. Goodsell occupied the house and business office until his death in 1924.
George Goodsell was born in 1859. He operated a stagecoach business as a young man in the Adirondack region. He also became an excellent Adirondack woodsman and a guide for wealthy sportsmen. In the 1890s he supplemented his income by working as a building contractor in the hunting off-season. His office was on the first floor of the house.
Goodsell gained a reputation as a skilled craftsman and contractor during the early 20th century. He built a number of private wilderness retreats and was also the principal contractor for the Adirondack League Club, one of the largest private preserves in the Adirondacks. The simple Queen Anne house of George Goodsell are typical of dwellings constructed in Old Forge during the first quarter of the 20th century. It also reflects standard building practice in other small Adirondack communities during the period.
Today, the house is used as the Town of Webb Historical Association building. It is open all year long on Tuesday-Saturday from 10AM-3PM.
