These decorative gargoyles are on the baptism font in St Materiana’s Church. One gargoyle is situated on each corner of the font.
St Materiana's is an ancient church it has Norman origins, with some Saxon additions.
The early Norman font consists of a basin, square at the top but rounded below, supported on a cylindrical pedestal, and at the angles by octagonal shafts leaning outwards toward the base; the basin is ornamented with masks and figures of serpents at the four corners representing the evil spirit expelled by grace.
