This cathedral, on the north side of Cathedral Square in the Kremlin, was the center of Russian Orthodoxy. The present building, designed by the Italian architect, Aristotle Fioravanti, was constructed between 1475 and 1479. The large portico on the south side was opened for state processions and all coronations from 1498 t0 1896 were held here. Most of the heads of the Russian Church are buried here.
The interior is spacious with four huge columns, elaborate chandeliers and a multitude of brightly colored frescoes and icons covering every surface including the interior of the central dome. An elaborate carved wooden throne made for Ivan the Terrible in 1551 is on display. The semicircular gables on the exterior display frescoes.
The cathedral was closed in 1918 and was returned to the church in 1989. It now functions mainly as a museum but services are held here on major feast days.
