Rev. Thomas Smith arrived in Parkersburg in 1843. Rev. Smith started the erection of the church, but died on April 4, 1847, never seeing the church completed. Rev. Thomas Smith was buried in the foundation of the original building. The original church building was completed in may, 1850.
In later years the original building was torn down and a larger church was constructed. The present church was completed and consecrated on May 4, 1878.
