SIOUX FALLS, in the river SW of the John Morrell & Company plant, is a spot where the falls of the Big Sioux River can be seen, their beauty now somewhat marred by blasting that was necessary in the construction of the power dam. During high water the violent, tumultuous rapids foam and roar over the many bold crags of quartzite.
The area around the falls has been made into a beautiful park and in the evenings, using mirrors, a laser light show takes place over the falls. It is said to be quite beautiful. We visited early in the morning and the typically busy park was quiet and peaceful. Be sure to visit the ruins of the Queen Bee Mill, adjacent to the falls.
The only unsettling thing about the area is that the air is filled with the strong smell of slightly chemical laden smoked ham thanks to the John Morrell Plant next to the park. I love ham, but the smell wasn't lovely...trust me. Maybe later in the day the smell isn't as strong.
