Built between 1704 an 1733 during the rule of Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg, the Residential Palace is one of the biggest German baroque palaces still around today: it has 452 rooms in 28 builindgs. It is called the "Swabian Versailles" and was the residence of the kings of Wurttemberg. Today state receptions and cultural events are still held here most often in the palace theater but also in the assembly room.
The origins of the baroque town of Ludwigsburg start with the Residence for which the Duke laid the foundation stone in 1704. The palaces, other historical buildings, the typical gardens, avenues, streets and squares still dominate the town layout and reflect the baroque character.
