The series of plaques offers only a brief glimpse into the location and speech.
Why is this Lincoln's "Lost Speech?"
The main reason was Mr. Lincoln did not use a prepared speech for this occasion. Additionally, the few reporters that were covering the convention did not take proper notes. Speculation is either the reporters were so enraptured with the speech their pens did not write or Lincoln's speech was so inflammatory they refused to give it credibility.
However, one of the plaques states:
"We say to our Southern brethren 'We won't go out of the Union and you shan't.' " - Widely accepted as the concluding statement of Abraham Lincoln's "Lost Speech" made here on May 29, 1856.
The final plaque states:
This tablet marks the site where ABRAHAM LINCOLN delivered his famous "Lost Speech" May 29, 1856 - Placed by Letitia Green Stevenson Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution - May 29, 1918
