This mound was part of a much larger earthwork. It is believed that the earthworks were constructed by Hopewell's between 100 BC and AD 400. Scientists have also found signs of humans here dating back to 8,000 BC. Much of the former earthworks were plowed under by farmers, but the Jeffers Mound was protected, and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
