Grete Waitz is a former Norwegian marathon runner who won nine New York City Marathons between 1978 and 1988. She also won a silver medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and a gold medal at the 1983 World Championships in Athletics in Helsinki, Finland.

She started running middle and long distance track races in her teen years, but eventually started running marathons. She received an invitation from the director of the New York City Marathon in 1978 to run the race, and won it in record time. In fact she won the race nine times over the years, breaking the record three times.

Waitz has since retired from competetive running, but continues to be active in the sport as a spokeswoman.

EDIT: Grete Waitz died April 19, 2011 at the age of 57 after a six year battle with cancer.

The statue stands outside the Stave Church in the Norway pavilion at Epcot in Walt Disney World.
