This structure was commissioned by PA coal baron John B. McCreary in 1869, and was built by architect Stephen Decatur Button as a summer retreat. The dominant feature of the building is its 60 foot tower, as well as its unique windows.
In 1873, John's son, George D. McCreary built his summer home next to his father's. This building was built in the Second Empire style and with a convex mansard roof.
These 2 buildings compise "The Abbey" - one of the most recognized B&B's in Cape May. In fact, architectural drawings of the Abbey have been placed in the Library of Congress.
