This 2 story brick home was a gift to U.S. Grant after the end of the Civil War. It stands on a broad expanse of lawn overlooking the park in the valley below it.
The building was given to the state by Grants children to be operated as a permanent memorial to their father. The state of Illinois continues to operate a museum in the building and in 1955 financed an extensive restoration to the home, returning it to its 1868 appearance.
