The listed coordinates are for a plaque at the Welland Canal Lock 3 Museum and Visitor's Center in St. Catharines, Ontario. It declares the Fourth Welland Canal an "Outstanding Canadian Engineering Achievement" by the Engineering Institute of Canada and its member societies.
The Welland Canal connects Lake Ontario and Lake Erie since traversing the Niagara River is just a little bit hazardous to any ship, especially around the Niagara Falls area.
Opened in 1932, the Fourth Welland Canal is 43.4 kilometers (27 miles) long and overcomes 99.5 meter (326 feet) difference in elevation between the two lakes via 7 lift locks and 1 control lock.
The site offers the opporunity to watch Lock #3 in action.
