Frank was a member of the 83rd Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He earned a Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Vicksburg on May 22nd, 1863. His citation simply stated, 'Gallantry in the charge of the "volunteer storming party."' The 83rd went on to participate in the battles of Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Savannah and on into the Carolinas. The 83rd lost 56 men to combat but 220 to disease.
The 83rd had 10 members earn the Medal of Honor, including at least one other for the same action in which Private Stolz was recognized. The other soldier, John Wesley Chapman, and Frank Stolz were not awarded there medals until 1894.
Frank Stolz was from Dearborn County Indiana and enlisted in the town of Sunman.
