En France, la gendarmerie nationale
est une force de police à statut militaire subordonnée
au ministère de la Défense pour les missions militaires
et sous tutelle du ministère de l'Intérieur pour les
missions de police (la Police nationale dépend du ministère
de l'Intérieur). Le numéro d'urgence de la gendarmerie
est le même que celui de la police: le 17 ou le 112
Les gendarmes sont habituellement
chargés du maintien de l'ordre dans les zones rurales et les
zones dites « péri-urbaines », alors que la police
nationale est chargée des zones urbaines. La limite de
compétence entre les deux forces de police est fixée au
seuil de 20.000 habitants.
La gendarmerie assure des missions
diverses qui font sa spécificité :
Missions administratives : maintien
de l'ordre, assistance et secours, circulation routière,
police administrative.
Missions judiciaires : recherche des
auteurs d'infractions à la loi pénale.
Missions militaires : police
militaire, prévôté et missions extérieures.
