On a small hillock overlooking New Castle is the Greek Revival courthouse, built in 1855. It’s not the most dominant building in the city – that would be the rear of the Scottish Rite Cathedral perched upon the North Hill.

Lawrence County was formed in 1849 from parts of Beaver and Mercer counties. The courthouse sits on Countyline Street, the street that once formed the border in New Castle between the two counties.

The courthouse has been expanded numerous times throughout the years. But the architectural integrity of the courthouse was maintained until sometime after the courthouse’s nomination. Since then, when the City of New Castle was in the throes of yet another desperate urban renewal project to stop its hemorrhaging of population, a huge stuccoed office building was appended to the courthouse. If you view the courthouse from Court Street, it’s a fine Greek Revival Building. Just don’t look at any of the other facades.
