The county seat of Cuming county was named West Point in 1858 because at the time it was the westernmost settlement in Nebraska's Elkhorn Valley. The courthouse constructed in 1870 had reached the end of its usefulness by the late 1940s.
In 1947 County officials voted that an election be held to approve a one-mill tax levy for five years to provide a building fund for a new courthouse. The election was held in June 1948 and was resoundingly approved by a 3-to-1 margin. Construction began in September 1953 and was completed in 1954. The present modern style courthouse stands on a knoll in the center of town, overlooking the Elkhorn Valley.
