Madison County's current courthouse, its third, stands at the geographical center of the county. The four identical wings of the building, which join to form a greek cross, are fronted by columned porticoes. The eight sided dome rises to 136 feet. The building, which was constructed in 1876, was placed on the National Historical Register in 1966
