On Abram's Creek, near the site of the early Cherokee village, Chilhowee, William and Robert James established a water-powered cotton and woolen spinning and weaving factory. A charter for the business was issued in 1848 and the mill was evidently in operation by 1853. The business closed before the Civil War and was never reopened.
