It took three months of round-the-clock (except on Sunday) drilling and blasting to carve this tunnel through 600' of the solid granite of Marys Rock Mountain.
Persistent dripping water from springs caused falling rock and treacherous winter ice. A concrete liner built in 1958 helped alleviate the problem. Today you can still see icicles at the portals in the winter and a small waterfall at the south portal except during dry summer months.
