Irish settlers in southeast Iowa erected this large brick and sandstone Catholic church in 1860 replacing an earlier log cabin at the settlement known as Georgetown. The town no longer exists but the church and its parish house still stand on a hill top by Highway 34 between Albia and Chariton. It has been called "The Cathedral of the Prairie". It was placed on the National Historic Register in 1992.
