One of three obelisks called Cleopatra's Needle. The other two are in Paris and London. This one was created around 1500 bc by Thutmosis III to announce just how great he was.
The obelisk was given to New York in May 1879 and erected January 1881. Transporting the 71 foot tall, 193 ton spire was a long process. It took four months just to move it from the Hudson River to Central Park.
It is located on the eastern side of Central Park, behind (west of) the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
