The Royal York opened in downtown Toronto in 1929 on the site of two previous hotels. At the time of its opening, it was state of the art featuring 10 elevators and radios and private baths in every room. The original 1048 rooms were added on to in 1959 to a total of 1600 rooms. Also at the time of its completion, the hotel was the tallest building in Toronto until it was surpassed one year later by the Canadian Bank of Commerce building.
When the Queen Elizabeth and the Royal family visited, the Royal York was the hotel of choice, often reserving an entire floor including the royal suite.
