In 1971, the State of Michigan was gifted nearly 3,000 acres from the Fort Custer Military Reservation. The land was then placed under the supervision of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to preserve and protect the abundant natural resources. Today, the site is home to the Fort Custer State Recreation Area. The park overnight modern camping, three lakes, a beach, access to the Kalamazoo River, picnic shelters and an excellent trail system popular with moutain bikers, hikers and equestrians.
