In 1998, Cordish Co., a Baltimore developer, hired architects Rowlett & Scott to remodel the 130,000-square-foot Albert Thomas Convention and Exposition Center into an entertainment venue, Bayou Place. The first tenants were various restaurants, the 2400-seat Verizon Wireless Theater, and the seven-screen Angelika Film Center. After three decades of plans put forth – some implemented, some tossed aside – to bring downtown back to life, something finally achieved the right balance. If it was Bayou Place, or the redevelopment of the historic Rice Hotel into lofts, one doesn’t know. But Bayou Place, with the arched walkways of the Albert Thomas turned into a ‘front porch’ for downtown, was a success, eventually attracting other restaurants and clubs, such as the Hard Rock.
