The Wortham, clad in rose bricks from Henderson, Texas, boasts two stages – the 2,423 seat Brown Theater and the 1,100 seat Cullen Theater. Both Houston Grand Opera and the Ballet use the larger Brown Theater, where no seat is more than 138 feet from the stage. The Cullen Theater is used by a number of performing arts organizations for special engagements and touring shows.
The Houston Ballet produces ten shows, a mixture of contemporary and classic works, from September through June. Each Holiday Season is the annual performance of the Nutcracker. Tickets range from $17-98. The Houston Grand Opera also presents a mixture of classic and contemporary works in seven productions from October through May. Tickets range from $20-250.
It’s a much-touted fact that the Wortham Center was built entirely with private funds. In fact, all of Houston’s public theaters – Jones Hall, the Wortham, Hobby Center, and the Alley Theater – were built with private funds. Public funds were reserved for sports and convention facilities - the Astrodome, the Summit, Minute Maid Park, Reliant Park, the George R. Brown Convention Center, and the Toyota Center.
