The castle Landskron was errected by the Salian and the Staufen emperors in the 10th century. First destroyed 1118, and a second time 1257 by the citizens of the town.
It was rebuilt in 1275 by Rudolf von Habsburg, the castle was put in pawn to Ruprecht von der Pfalz in 1375.
A fire destroyed the castle in 1621 and the keep was blown away in 1689 by the french during the War of Grand Alliance.
The town Oppenheim is the owner since the 19th century and in 1978 the property passes on to the federal state Rhineland-Palatinate.
Today the ruine is a open air theatre and the starting- and endpoint of nature trail about wine.
