The swath of land in the median of Shoreline Boulevard was dedicated to Warren Joseph Sherrill in 1952. In 1952 it formed a ‘front lawn’ for the new City Hall. Now it’s the front lawn for the Art Center of Corpus Christi. Sherrill was Corpus Christi’s first casualty in World War II, killed aboard the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor.
Over the years, monuments and memorials for various wars of the 20th century have been placed in the park, with monuments dedicated to Vietnam POW-MIAs, Coast Guard workers killed during a rescue, and ‘the men and women who have served in the global war on terrorism.’ Oddly, a playground has been added to this memorial park.
