Long Description:
The stone stack is all that remains of the Catharine Furnace, built in 1837. Closed 10 years later, the furnace was reopened to meet the Confederacy's wartime need for iron. In 1864, General Custer's Union cavalry destroyed it, but the Confederacy rebuilt it and it continued to produce iron until 1865.
