Washington University in St. Louis was originally located in the downtown area of St. Louis. In 1892 on the western edge of St. Louis was purchased. The university hired the firm of Frederick Law Olmsted to design the site plan. The site plan was developed between 1894 and 1899 prior to construction of any of the buildings on campus. The university campus basic layout consists of buildings surrounding quadrangles and courtyards.
