CDR. Dale A. Gardner USN received special training for one year before being selected into the astronaut program. He went into space August 30, 1983 and again on November 8, 1984.

Col. David C. Hilmers USMC also trained for one year before being selected into the astronaut program. He went into space four times; October 3, 1985, September 29, 1988, February 28, 1990, and January 22, 1992.

Both of these men retired with honors.

The Discovery Trail is a walking/bicycle trail along the Mississippi River in Clinton, Iowa.
