The Old Sweet Springs opened in 1833, but its origins date back to 1783 when William Lewis constructed several log cabins to promote the areas healing springs. The grand inn was constructed in 1838 and was a popular resort getaway for visitors who would travel for days by coach and later by train. The resort remained open until the mid-1930’s, when it was forced to close due to the lack of visitors. In 1941 the property was purchased by the State of West Virginia and opened as a home and Sanatorium for the aged in 1945. The Rowan Memorial Home closed in the early 1990's and the property has been vacant ever since.
This historic marker stands on the side of Route 311 across the road from the Old Sweet Springs Inn. The text of the marker reads:
ROWAN MEMORIAL HOME
"Established as a home for the aged by act of the Legislature in 1945. Named for Andrew Summers Rowan, carrier of the "message to Garcia". The oldest building, erected in 1833, is of Thomas Jefferson design and named in his honor."
