Corpus Christi, population 277,454, with a metropolitan area of 403,280, is the largest city along the Gulf Coast south of Houston, situated at the mouth of the Nueces River on Corpus Christi Bay.
Most of Corpus’ history is relatively recent. The Spanish and the Mexicans never settled Corpus Christi Bay, allowing the native Karankawas to roam until the extinction. After Texan independence, Henry Lawrence Kinney established a trading post on the bay near the mouth of the Nueces. The town grew around the trading post. Unfortunately, the property belonged to Captain Enrique Villareal. Villareal brought 300 men to Kinney’s Trading Post in 1841 to reclaim his land. Kinney bought it from him. |
Despite many promotions by Kinney, the town didn’t grow much until General Zachary Taylor encamped near-by in 1845, using Corpus as a staging point for his invasion of Mexico. By 1846, Corpus was the county seat of the newly formed Nueces County. It was incorporated in 1852.
Without a deep water port, Corpus still grew sluggishly. In 1919 a hurricane destroyed much of the city. Strangely enough, the hurricane, and its destruction of Corpus’ shipping industry, was the impetus behind the federal government finally approving funds for a protected deep-water port. The Corpus Christi Ship Channel opened in 1926, just around the time of oil discoveries in South Texas. The city quickly became the trading and shipping hub for the surrounding oil industry.
Today, Corpus walks a fine line between two diametrically opposed industries – chemicals and tourism. On the bayfront, the beach sparkles and the sea shines. Behind the Harbor Bridge, refineries spew and ramshackle houses spread out into the distance. |
